Her nights are the most valuable asset in the industry. Studios option them before she wakes. Analysts brief entire boards from what she saw. Engineers arrange the final dream of each night so the ledger closes green.

She is the best there has ever been. She is also starting to notice the seams — a co-star who reads the script before falling asleep, a skyline that reuses its weather, a life that behaves like it has a producer.

Company Dreamer follows her through the machinery of a business built on other people's sleep, toward the one dream nobody is allowed to edit.

RECOVERED TRANSMISSIONS / HOW THE INDUSTRY WORKS

Machinery of
the night shift.

TX-01 · THE SENSOR ARRAY

Sleep under the crown.

Non-invasive. Painless. Most subjects report only the sensation of being gently read. That is not a side effect. That is the service.

TX-02 · YIELD STATEMENTS

Wake to a grade.

Dreams rated A through Z against nightly quotas. A-dreams pay dividends. Z-dreams are deducted from your account.

TX-03 · END-DREAM ENGINEERING

The last dream is scheduled.

The final dream of your night is arranged for maximum yield. Hers has a production calendar. Everyone is watching.

TX-04 · THE LEDGER

Somewhere, an accountant.

Your sleeping hours are balanced against your waking life, nightly. She has begun checking the math. The math does not appreciate it.

CAPTIONS RECOVERED FROM PLAYBACK

“You were paid for this dream. Try to enjoy it.”

“Somewhere below the array, a woman is being edited.”

“The last dream of the night belongs to the company.”

THE DREAMER BEHIND THE DREAM

About the
author.

Enan Joe Heneghan grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago — Downers Grove, class of the '90s — went on to manage Blockbuster stores across three states, earned an M.A., and now teaches in Australia.

Which is to say: he has spent his life around stories people consume after hours, and he wrote the industry he suspects is already real.
